6 Components of an Effective Return-to-Work Program

04/29/2021 Written by: Tara Crisp-Schwartz

One of the first steps in evaluating your current Workers’ Compensation and Return-to-Work (RTW) program is reviewing and revising current job descriptions to ensure they are EEOC and ADA-compliant. Once this task is complete, you can pre-plan for your return-to-work program. Why pre-plan? If you have not had a clear, concise discussion with your management team on RTW, you may get delayed when it comes time to implement the program for your injured worker.

An effective Return-to-Work program includes the following:

  • Modified duty policy that includes information on third party placement at a nonprofit that has been acknowledged by all employees
  • Medical release forms
  • FMLA policy that tracks FMLA leave concurrently with Workers’ Compensation lost time
  • Task letters that include job tasks for sedentary and light duty and noting these are temporary positions
  • Formal modified duty letter templates
  • Complete accurate job descriptions

If controlling your Experience Modification factor is one of your business goals, then you should also understand the importance of the difference between a full wage offer and partial wage offer.

AssuredPartners provides clients with tools that give them the ability to create EEOC-compliant job description. For more information on developing an effective RTW program, accurate job descriptions and how they affect your overall company goals, contact the AssuredPartners Energy team.
