Wellness Program Engages Employees and Decreases Costs

Case Study

Challenge

AssuredPartners clinical analysis identified extremely low rates of preventive screenings and clinical condition compliance. Given the group's industry (healthcare), absenteeism was an issue and hence an additional motivating factor to improve the health of associates. Due to multiple acquisitions of other medical entities, communication was difficult, and engagement was a struggle.

Solution

AssuredPartners Health & Productivity team conducted a thorough analysis of benefits, programs and culture as well as a clinical/claims analysis to identify risk populations. A multi-year strategy was developed to include establishment and training of a wellness committee, incorporation of clinical programs from a partner university, implementation of an online wellness platform and health coaching. Premium discounts tied to participation in the program.

Results

Developed a year-over-year analysis of the wellness program and its impact on claims. The wellness-engaged cohort was compared to the non-engaged cohort in prevention, clinical condition compliance and absenteeism. Engaged members have consistently outperformed non-engaged members in prevention (by 17%), condition compliance, and PEPM claims cost (46% difference in cost). Analysis of absenteeism data showed that on average, non-engaged members experienced 3 more days of unscheduled absenteeism compared to their engaged counterparts.
