The Importance of War Coverage

12/09/2018 Written by: AP Aerospace

In standard Aviation Hull and Liability policies, there are usually exclusions for ‘war’ risks and related perils. You might think to yourself, “Why would I need war coverage? The chances of a war-related event occurring are slim, right?" The problem is, the ‘War Risks and Related Perils’ exclusion does not just exclude war-related events. On the contrary, many unforeseen events may fall under the War Risks & Related Perils exclusion. Below is a list of perils that are excluded from a standard Aviation Hull & Liability policy under the War Risks & Related Perils exclusion:

  • War, invasion, acts of foreign enemies, hostilities, civil war, rebellion revolution, military power
  • Any act of one or more persons, whether or not agents of a sovereign power, for political or terrorist purposes and whether the loss or damage resulting therefrom is accidental or intentional
  • Strikes, riots, civil commotions or labor disturbances
  • Malicious acts or acts of sabotage
  • Confiscation, nationalizations, seizure, detention, etc.
  • Hijacking or any unlawful seizure of the aircraft or crew (including attempts)

Take a moment to consider the individuals that have access to your aircraft. What if your aircraft is parked out on the ramp and someone sneaks onto the airport and runs a key along the entire length of your aircraft? What if an employee at the airport at which your aircraft is stored decides to take your aircraft for a joyride and gets into an accident in the process? These acts might not be covered under your standard Aviation Hull & Liability policy.

Although these events may seem unlikely, there is a possibility they can happen and it is crucial to take steps to try and prevent them. Taking a few of these measures may help to ensure your aircraft is not damaged by one of the excluded perils above:

  • Conduct necessary background checks and safety briefings with each pilot before allowing the aircraft to be operated
  • Hangar your aircraft when away from its home base
  • Follow all checklists for securing, locking and storing your aircraft
  • Limit and monitor access of your aircraft
  • Have a standard operating procedure and be sure all personnel follow it

While these measures will help reduce your risk, if you experience such an event, you’ll want to be sure you have the right insurance coverage to protect you. Adding the War Risks & Related Perils endorsement not only insures you against malicious acts and confiscation, but it also can provide coverage for other events such as invasion, acts of foreign enemies, hostilities, civil war, rebellion revolution, military power, strikes, riots, civil commotions and more. To learn more and make sure you are adequately protected, contact our team of Aerospace experts.
