Determining If Your Home is Protected from Cosmetic Damage

03/30/2020 Written by: Charlene Noring

Spring weather can bring unexpected surprises including weather-related claims to your home. Coverage on homeowner policies can vary considerably by carrier. Due to extensive storm damage from violent storms the past several years, some carriers have adopted cosmetic damage exclusions to help limit substantial payout and rising insurance premiums. If you live in area that is exposed to weather-related storms, it is important to review your homeowner’s policy to ensure your policy covers cosmetic damage.
Cosmetic damage is defined as physical damage such as marring, denting, scratching or discoloration that the affects the appearance of your home; however, cosmetic damage does not interfere with the overall function of the roof, siding, doors or your windows in protecting your home from further damage. Cosmetic damage primarily applies to the exterior elements of your home.  For example, metal roofs may not be attractive if dinged from a hailstorm, however, the roof continues to provide protection to your home from the weather elements. Insurance policies are designed to provide coverage to your property for direct physical damage, not the appearance or loss of economic value.
Cosmetic damage coverage ensures your home is properly protected against unexpected or accidental damage to your home. To be prepared for weather-related claims, homeowners should review their insurance policies and coverages with their independent agent to find out if the policies include coverage for cosmetic damage or if cosmetic coverage is available by endorsement.
