Holiday Fire Risks

12/19/2021 Written by: Sara Taylor, CPRIA, Director of Personal Insurance

The holiday season is usually one of the most enjoyable times of the year. It is quality time spent with friends, family, and co-workers celebrating a joyous occasion. While this may be one of the most festive times of the year, it can also cause issues at your home, namely in the form of home fires. During the holidays, the risk of fire increases due to Christmas tree fires, candles, or maybe even holiday cooking. Check out these Holiday Fire Facts from the National Fire Protection Association. Some notable statistics include:

  • From 2015-2019, United States Fire Departments responded to an average of 160 home fires per year that started with Christmas trees. These fires have caused an average of two deaths, 12 injuries, and $10 million in direct property damage annually.
  • Electrical distribution or lighting equipment was involved in almost half of all home Christmas tree fires. Nearly one in five Christmas tree fires were started by decorative lights.
  • From 2015-2019, United States Fire Departments responded to an average of 7,400 home fires that were started by candles. These fires caused an average of 90 civilian deaths, 670 civilian injuries, and $291 million in direct property damage.
  • Cooking equipment was involved in one in every five (19%) home decoration fires.

It is important to follow proper safety protocols to make sure that your home is protected from a possible home fire. However, if for some reason your family home catches fire, it is overwhelming, devastating, and you may be in a temporary home for a while.
